Organization Profile
Gesneriad Conservation Center of China

The Gesneriad Conservation Center of China (GCCC) is China's first specialized institution dedicated to the conservation of Gesneriaceae plants. It was established by Dr. Wei Yigang and Mr. Stephen Maciejewski (from the Gesneriad Society, USA) in September 2011, with strong support from the Guangxi Institute of Botany and the Gesneriad Society. GCCC was officially inaugurated on April 1, 2014. Since its establishment, all members of the center have been committed to a range of activities related to the conservation of Gesneriaceae plants in China, including field surveys, assessments of their status and threats, IUCN Red List assessments, introduction and rescue cultivation, germplasm resource preservation, domestication, breeding of new varieties, promotion, and public education. GCCC has made significant contributions to the conservation of Gesneriaceae plants and has received widespread acclaim.

In 2017, GCCC established four sub-centers in different regions, including the Guizhou Botanical Garden, Anhui University, Xianhu Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Shanghai Botanical Garden. Currently, preparations are underway for additional sub-centers in Yunnan and Hunan provinces. These sub-centers operate within the framework of the "Gesneriad Conservation Center of China" and leverage their regional advantages, wild resources, research capabilities, teaching facilities, and conservation efforts to share germplasm resources, information, and achievements, engage in unified external cooperation, and conduct coordinated public education and outreach efforts. They aim to make greater contributions to the conservation of Gesneriaceae plants in China. The National Gesneriaceae Germplasm Resource Repository is an extension of these efforts, focusing on the conservation and sustainable utilization of Gesneriaceae plants in China.

The Gesneriad Conservation Center of China will continue its efforts to promote the conservation of Gesneriaceae plants in China and contribute to the development, prosperity, and sustainability of the national Gesneriaceae horticultural industry.
