National Gesneriaceae Germplasm Resources Bank of Guangxi Institute of Botany

On October 9, 2020, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration officially issued Document [2020] No. 91, announcing the second batch of national germplasm resource repositories for flowers. Among them, the National Gesneriaceae Germplasm Resource Repository of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangxi Institute of Botany, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (hereinafter referred to as the National Gesneriaceae Germplasm Resource Repository) is the only one obtained by Guangxi on this list.

The National Gesneriaceae Germplasm Resource Repository is a significant achievement built upon the foundation of the Gesneriad Conservation Center of China (GCCC) at the Guangxi Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has been achieved through years of dedication, accumulation, and hard work. It also comes with great responsibility.

Since 2018, the National Germplasm Resource Repository Preparatory Group (GCCC, etc.), which has evolved into the National Gesneriaceae Germplasm Resource Repository, has been committed to the collection of domestic Gesneriaceae plants. At the genus level, the collection rate is as high as 90%, and the species collection rate is around 60% of domestic Gesneriaceae species, surpassing the majority. The collected germplasm resources of China's endemic species account for over 64% of the total. This demonstrates that as a germplasm repository for native Gesneriaceae plants, it is highly representative in terms of richness, diversity, and endemism.

Furthermore, the National Gesneriaceae Germplasm Resource Repository also shoulders the responsibility of collecting existing and cultivating new varieties of germplasm resources. For example, it has collected more than 120 varieties of Primulina, over 150 varieties of Petrocodon, and more than 60 varieties of Lysionotus. It has also bred over 100 new varieties of Primulina, which have been internationally registered. It is the first institution in the world to report new varieties of Chirita, Paraboea, and Ramonda (distant intergeneric hybrids of Primulina and Petrocodon) with different leaf characteristics.
