Recently, the research group leading by Prof. Yi-Gang Wei and Prof./Dr. Fang Wen of GCCC, Guangxi Institute of Botany, CAS (GXIB) (Guilin Botanical Garden, GLBG) registered 14 new cultivars on The Gesneriad Society, the International Registration Authority for all gesneriad hybrids except those in the genus Saintpaulia, including ‘GCCC’sBridalBouquet’, ‘GCCC’s Silky Red’, ‘GCCC’s Full Moon’, ‘GCCC’s Sulfur Mine’, ‘Jade Tablet’, ‘Sunset Glow’, ‘Flower of Gold-Moutain’, etc. Among them, ‘Jade Tablet’, ‘Sunset Glow’ was raised assisting by Mr. Wei-Chuen Chou, ‘Flower of Gold-Mountain’ by Mr. Chen-Yang Zhao and ‘GCCC's Purple Bunny’ by a Master Degree Candidate, Mr. Quan Yuan. Guangxi Institute of Botany, CAS (Guilin Botanical Garden) was registered 39 cultivars with proprietary intellectual property on The Gesneriad Society so far.
Since the mid of 1990s, GXIB (GLBG) is working on the introduction and conservation of Gesneriaceae of China. We’ve collected 455 species in 40 genus (totally 758 species in 44 genus endemic to China), up to 60% in species and 90% in species. Based on the germplasm preserved, studies on germplasm screening, cross breeding for creating new potted flowering/foliage plants were carried out, and research on the key technology for commercial production was also conducted. These have laid a solid foundation on the commercialization of new cultivars of Gesneriaceae.
The 14 new cultivars are various but all with high ornamental value. For example, the ‘GCCC’sBridalBouquet’ is profusely and early blooming, ranging from white to pinkish white, looks exactly the same as a bridal bouquet; while the ‘Sunset Glow’, the selected individuals of Primulina hochiensis var. ochroleuca sp. nov., is gradual blending from pink to yellow which the name was from; and the ‘Sulfur Mine’ combines yellow corolla and dark purple stripes of parents which makes it adorable.
The successful registries of these 14 new cultivars are the fruit of hard work of researchers in GXIB (GLBG), leading the trends of breeding research and utilization of Gesneriaceae of China, motivating the floricultural commercialization. We’ll deal with the shortcomings of wild species (e. g. short flowering period, easy-falling corolla and mainly bluish-purple tone), bring the beauties of South China to the floriculture market soon.
